Narrownet brings Sigfox's IoT network to Portugal

on 27 March 2015.

Portuguese IoT company Narrownet is deploying Sigfox’s Internet of Things network to enable new applications and services.

The deployment will bolster Sigfox’s reach, with the company already established in France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Spain. Sigfox has partnered with Arqiva in the UK to launch a smart cities project.

The network is expected to go live later this year, after Narrownet has developed an ecosystem for device makers and service providers. It is aiming Sigfox’s low cost and low battery powered network at entrepreneurs and engineers. Narrownet will showcase a range of services that are powered by Sigfox in other markets to show developers the potential of IoT.

Narrownet CEO Enrique Zorzano said: “Our motivations for joining the Sigfox network include tapping into Portugal’s deep pool of talent for developing new technologies, and providing IoT services to all segments of Portuguese society, including those who cannot afford broadband services.

“Moreover, we foresee an intense collaboration with major telecommunication companies to provide M2M services in those areas where they are unavailable, as well as to help them to extend the range of connectivity services they offer. Soon we will be happy to announce the integration in NarrowNet’s project of well-known Portuguese infrastructure companies.”

Rodolphe Baronnet-Frugès, Executive Vice-President International Business Development at Sigfox, said: “Portugal has an active, fast-growing Internet of Things market, and our partnership with NarrowNet is a significant part of SIGFOX’s plan to establish a global cellular network dedicated to the IoT. This partnership highlights once again how the Sigfox Network Operator program allows local providers to quickly and economically offer Internet of Things connectivity and services.”
