Italian communications regulator Agcom has given its approval to requests from MVNOs Fastweb Mobile and Welcome Italia to continue to opt out of the roam-like-at-home requirement in the EU over a period of 12 months on grounds that it won’t be able to cover the corresponding roaming costs. Under the EU regulation, operators can opt out of roam-like-at-home and continue to apply regulated surcharges if they can prove to their national watchdog that they will lose money if forced to apply the measure.
Fastweb Mobile and Welcome Italia will be able to apply a 3.2 eurocents per minute surcharge for outgoing calls and a 0.45 eurocents per MB surcharge for data roaming once specified limits have been exceeded, the latter falling to 0.35 eurocents from 01 January 2020. The surcharges can be applied for a period of 12 months starting from 21 July 2019.
Agcom said both operators will be required to give customers with up-to-date information regarding the surcharges applied via SMS.
