Sprint Sues AT&T Over 4G/5G Labels – WLTZ 38 NBC

SPINT IS SUING AT&T FOR BRANDING ITS UPGRADED LTE NETWORK 5G EVOLUTION WHEN IT IS NOT TRULY 5G

(CNN) – Sprint is suing AT&T for what it calls deceptively branding its 4G network as 5G technology.

5G is the fifth generation of wireless technology.

It promises super-fast speeds, but building those 5G networks takes years.

In the meantime, AT&T has upgraded its 4G technology to offer speeds twice as fast as earlier versions.

It’s called LTE advanced and Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile have done the same thing.

AT&T calls its network “5G evolution,” and that’s what Sprint says is deceptive.

AT&T  updated its phones’ software last month to display “5GE” when they access the LTE advanced network.

Sprint is arguing that, along with AT&T’s advertising campaign promoting the 5G-evolution,  is meant to convince customers they are using a true 5G network when they aren’t.

None of this is new to the industry, in 2010, both T-Mobile and AT&T branded their upgraded 3G networks as 4G.

AT&T does have a true 5G network, but it can only be accessed by invitation and is available only in parts of 12 cities.
