Local Calls Within 626 Area Code to Require 10-Digit Dialing Next Month – Pasadena Now – Pasadena Now

Callers within the 626 area code will need to dial full 10-digit numbers, including the area code, when making local calls starting next month as as phone carriers make changes to allow for the adoption of ‘988’ through the nation as the access number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, according to the Federal Communications Commission.

Under federal law, 988 is to be established as the nationwide number to reach the Lifeline by July 16, 2022.

But in order for the system to work, changes must be made to the way phone calls operate in 82 area codes across 35 states, including the 626, the FCC said in a written statement.

Such area codes, which use “988” as their current local exchange, or central office code, officials said.

“To prepare for implementation of a quick way to dial the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline — using only ‘988’ to connect callers to the Lifeline — these area codes must transition to 10-digit dialing for all calls, including local calls,” the statement said.

The change was expected to take effect on Oct. 24, authorities said. The 10-digit dialing system has been operating in the affected area codes since April.

“Beginning on October 24, 2021, you must dial ten digits — area code + telephone number — for all local calls,” the FCC statement said. “On and after this date, local calls dialed with only seven digits may not connect, and a recording will inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed. You must hang up and dial again using the area code and the seven-digit number.”

Companies or individuals using PBX or VoIP phone systems may need to reprogram the systems to use 10-digit dialing.

“You should plan to complete any needed reprogramming and test your system before October 2021,” the statement added.

Even after the changes are in place, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline will also remain accessible by calling (800)-273-8255, officials said.
