Mark Zuckerberg is the new Oprah. For his 2015 New Year’s resolution, he created a book club and invited 30 million people to join in on the discussion of the bi-weekly book selection.
Oprah was Generation X’s book cash cow; since she left TV, it appears, the honor has been bestowed on Zuckerberg. Since Moises Naim’s The End of Power was announced as the inaugural book of his new club, its sales have skyrocketed. In a week, it went from Amazon.com rank #44,369 to #8.
It is now ranked #1 and #2 in its category of Economic History (Kindle and paperback editions are sold separately).
The reviews are almost as incredible. Craigslist founder Craig Newmark left a review on Sunday. “Power is flowing to regular people, people who’ve never had much of a voice, largely facilitated by the Internet,” he wrote in a 5-star review. It was the first review, according to Amazon’s ranking system, since last November.
The book club itself has swelled to over 150,000 users. The potential for Zuckerberg’s book club is just getting started.
