Which countries are included in the roaming ban?
A new EU law means won’t be stung with extra charges for using your phone in EU countries.
Despite this, it’s important to restrict usage when visiting nations that aren’t in the European Union.
This includes destinations like Switzerland, Andorra and the Isle of Man.
Holidaymakers are encouraged to check if their mobile provider includes Turkey in the ban or not, as this varies across the board.

What are roaming charges?
Roaming charges are the fees customers cough up after using their phones in a foreign country.
Your bill may be bumped up if you make calls, text or use the internet while on holiday.
Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at uSwitch.com said more than one in 10 customers who’ve been outside the EU in the past year have received a higher than normal bill – averaging £103.
When did the ban come in to place?
Mobile phone companies have now stopped charging customers an excess for using their phones while in EU countries.
This rule was implemented on Thursday, June 15.
In the past, Brits travelling overseas within Europe have faced shock bills when they’ve returned home after using their mobiles abroad.
Who is eligible for free EU roaming?
Under the new law, all mobile operators in the UK are no longer allowed to charge for international data roaming in Europe since June 15.
But according to MoneySavingExpert (MSE), EE and BT mobile customers who failed their credit checks are not able to use their UK minutes, texts and data when travelling in Europe.
This is because some mobile providers put up to a six-month worldwide roaming ban on new customers who failed credit checks when they signed up even though they were still offered a mobile contract.
A spokesperson for EE told the Sun Online that such blocks are put into place to both protect customers and reduce risks.
He said: “We do offer customers who failed their credit checks the option to get a monthly contract but it comes with some limitations, such as no ability to roam.”
How to avoid any additional fees abroad

- Check your contract: Most providers have informed their customers about the new rules and which countries are included in their roaming bundle, but it’s best to check before travelling to ensure you fully understand what your package allows you to do.
- Use wifi: Connect to free apps like WhatsApp, Viber and Skype to send messages and make calls
- Switch mobile provider: If you aren’t satisfied with the price and bundle your provider is offering you, and there are cheaper and better alternatives out there, look to switch
Why is there a ban on roaming charges?
The legislation to end roaming charges for people travelling in the EU was first proposed back in 2013.
And in October 2015, the European Parliament and the Council agreed that this should be in place on June 15 2017.
Mobile operators will now have to offer their roaming services at domestic prices to consumers travelling in the EU.
It follows a cap in wholesale prices earlier this year.
It means that British consumers will be charged the same as if they were to “roam at home.”
This should see an end to sky-high phone bills after you return from abroad.
