Angola’s Unitel is to offer free unlimited access to Wikipedia via mobile (2G and 3G) to all its customers.
The initiative, called Wikipedia Zero, is a Wikimedia Foundation project to give people unlimited access to Wikipedia free of data charges on their mobile devices. With this new collaboration, all Unitel customers who wish to access Wikipedia via mobile phone may do so, without being charged any cost for the data.
“Not only does this collaboration bring Wikipedia Zero to one of the largest communities of users in sub-Saharan Africa, but it is the first Portuguese speaking country in the world to launch Wikipedia Zero.” said Carolynne Schloeder, head of mobile partnerships with the Wikimedia Foundation.
For Unitel customers who are unable to purchase data for their mobile phones, the new agreement could revolutionize the way they learn and consume information.
Through this agreement, Unitel customers who go to m.wikipedia.org will have free access to all content provided by Wikipedia.
