Sony has revealed that Android 6.0 Marshmallow is coming to 14 Xperia mobile phones and tablets, but doesn’t say when the update will begin rolling out.
The software rollout is normally done in phases, and it can vary from country-to-country and between networks, though Sony does say it will be sharing more details “soon” on when things will kick off.
If you’re an Xperia owner, the 14 devices that Marshmallow is coming to are: Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact, Xperia Z5 Premium, Xperia Z4 Tablet, Xperia Z3+, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia M5, Xperia C5 Ultra, Xperia M4 Aqua, and Xperia C4.
Today’s news comes shortly after Verizon announced that the Sony Xperia Z4V, which was initially mooted for an August 13 launch in the U.S., is no longer happening. No reason was given for the cancellation, and on the surface it may seem as though all is not well, given that Sony doesn’t hold a strong brand presence in the U.S. smartphone market as things stand.
However, Sony’s upcoming Z5 smartphones are scheduled to launch later this month — in the U.S. too — so it could just be a case that someone has decided that introducing the Z4V at this juncture would simply make no sense.
