Samsung will shut down its Milk Video media-streaming service in November.
The Milk Video service launched in the US on 19 November 2014. Almost exactly a year later, it will close down.
“While we remain committed to providing premium entertainment services, we have decided to end support for the Samsung Milk Video app as of November 20, 2015,” said Samsung via the Milk Video Google Play Store listing.
As Variety reports, Samsung had envisaged Milk Video as part of a larger multimedia suite. This included Milk Music, a “free radio” service in the mould of Pandora – which is still in operation – as well as the Milk VR TV platform announced in January.
Milk Video is a mobile-focused service that aggregates videos from other video services such as YouTube and Vevo. Samsung also agreed deals for exclusive content from the likes of Funny Or Die and Vice, but it was clearly insufficient to attract viewers away from established rival services.

The writing has been on the wall for Milk since Samsung laid off staff in its content and services unit back in March. Indeed, the company’s own vice president of content and services, Kevin Swint, also left the company earlier in the year.
For now, at least, Milk Music and Milk VR will continue, but it isn’t looking good for Samsung’s efforts to create and curate content for its flagship devices.
