PUBG Mobile Addiction More Concerning than Drug Addiction, Says Student Association

Recently, video game addiction has become an especially hot topic, thanks to the World Health Organization officially recognizing it as a legitimate mental health disorder. In particular, there seems to be worry about how gaming addiction may impact children, with the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association in India going as far as to say addiction to the game PUBG Mobile is worse than drug addiction.

“The addiction to this game has become more concerning than addiction to drugs as we get to see youngsters 24 hours on the mobile phones and playing the game and doing nothing. We request the governor administration to immediately ban the game,” said Deputy Chairman Raqif Makhdoomi. It seems the Students Association is blaming PUBG Mobile for students’ poor performance in school, and that is part of the reason why it is calling for an outright ban of the game.

Calling for a video game ban is nothing new, and outside of China, it rarely ever happens. In fact, PUBG‘s chief battle royale rival, Fortnite, has often been the target of banning campaigns, with petitions being created online to make the game illegal for various reasons.

Some may be surprised to learn that PUBG Mobile is popular enough to cause this kind of reaction. After all, it’s no secret that the game lost a significant chunk of its active playerbase in the wake of Fortnite‘s boom in popularity and the launch of other battle royale competitors, like Black Ops 4‘s Blackout mode. However, the mobile version of PUBG seems to have remained consistently popular since launch, and the game in general is currently enjoying somewhat of a comeback.

PUBG‘s concurrent player count is finally starting to rebound as of late, thanks in no small part to its launch on PS4, as well as the addition of new content, like the Vikendi snow map. As long as the developers are able to keep this momentum going and are able to avoid the game being banned in certain countries, it seems as though PUBG will remain a major player in the battle royale community for some time to come.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is out now for iOS, Android, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
