The Post and Telecommunications Department is modernising its facilities and operations.

Eastern Regional Coordinator, Natasha Russell Martin, says three post offices in Kingston, Ocho Rios and Falmouth were recently renovated, and notes that significant stakeholder support was provided.

She told JIS News that the General Post Office (GPO) on King Street, downtown Kingston was refurbished, after being closed for one year, and reopened on February 4.

Mrs. Russell Martin said the work was facilitated through the Ministry of Justice, which spearheaded renovation of the adjoining Court of Appeal.

Meanwhile, she said, come Monday, February 11, the Ocho Rios Post Office in St. Ann will resume operations at its original location on Main Street, which was also renovated.

Mrs. Russell Martin indicated that the post office was temporarily relocated to the Ocean Village Plaza in Ocho Rios in March 2018, to facilitate the refurbishing exercise.

She said the Tourism Enhancement Fund’s (TEF) support was lobbied, primarily because the facility is located in a resort area.

“The infrastructure was not appealing to customers. Therefore, the Department sought to partner with the TEF to make it more spacious, modern and customer-centric,” she pointed out, adding that the Falmouth Post Office was also similarly refurbished.

Mrs. Russell Martin said the Department is looking to upgrade other post offices whenever funds are available and the opportunity arises.

“The Post and Telecommunications Department wants to let our customers know that we are thinking of them, and slowly but surely we are getting there in terms of modernizing our entity and staying relevant,” she added.
