China’s Huawei has announced that its smartphone shipments rose 28 percent in the first quarter. The company said that sales were helped by demand for higher margin models aimed at the premium market, which is currently dominated by Samsung and Apple.
Huawei said it shipped 17.5 million smartphones during the three months of January-March. Of that, about 34 percent were mid- to high-end models, compared with 5 percent in the same period a year earlier.
Huawei has previously said that it aims to ship 100 million smartphones in 2015. Shipments last year however fell short at 75 million versus a target of 80 million.
