The German government is seeking to reassure mobile operators on the definition of local roaming in a proposed amendment to the Telecommunication Law, according to a DPA report. The idea is to provide planning security for the providers, who are concerned about increased coverage requirements. Discussions are ongoing on how to implement it, Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure Andreas Scheuer told DPA.
The Parliament has asked experts in the government to review the potential changes of the Telecommunication Law. The German government has proposed to change the law in order to require operators to provide local roaming in areas without sufficient network coverage, such as rural areas. The change in the law would mean that in future providers would be required to share frequencies and infrastructure. Deustche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefonica Germany have filed lawsuits against the 5G auction rules set by the Federal Network Agency before the Cologne Administrative Court in protest at the requirements.
