GALLOWAY TWP — A restaurant was deemed an “unsanitary and an unsafe structure for human occupancy” and closed after exotic animals were seen loose in the kitchen, police said.
Police responded to AJ’s on the Lake just after noon Friday after receiving a call for an unrelated incident.
While there, they noticed “numerous” animals, including exotic birds and a cat, roaming the kitchen and food prep areas, according to the Galloway Township Police Department.
Upon further review, police determined the cafe was operating without a mercantile license from the township, and shut it down immediately.
The cafe’s phone number was out of service as of Saturday morning.
The animals were turned over to the care of a friend of the restaurant’s owner, and all employees were sent home. The owner has been charged for the violations, police said.
