The UMi Max costs just $169.99 (about £130) and crams in plenty of decent features for the money.

UMi may be a small Chinese smartphone manufacturer, but it doesn’t seem to be stopping them from releasing a lot of high-quality budget handsets. The UMi Max is the latest one to drop from the company and comes in at an attractive price, putting in the same bracket as heavyweights such as the Moto G4.

Aesthetically it looks to be a conventional candybar device, though the manufacturer has finished it off in a ‘Aerospace class’ metal unibody which looks very premium and curves around the edges of the handset. There’s also a glass front face and unique halo around the physical home button key which UMi say can glow in 7 different colours. Screen size is 5.5-inches with a resolution of 1080p, which is excellent considering the cost.

Featuring a MediaTek Helio P10 (a chip which is becoming a popular favourite in budget OEM handsets) and 3GB RAM, it has much better hardware than your typical device. Paired with this is a fingerprint scanner and huge 4,000mAh battery, which should easily get through two days of use. They’ve even managed to somehow cram in USB-C despite the low pricepoint offering.

On top of this is an internal memory of 16GB which is expandable up to 256GB, a 13 megapixel Panasonic rear sensor and a 5 megapixel selfie shooter. There’s also a ‘pure unadulterated’ version of Android 6.0 running on the handset, which is a fancy way of saying stock.

The UMi Max is available now from the umidigi website and places like Gearbest. It won’t be available directly in the UK. Colour options are Gunmetal Gray (shown) and Bling Gold.
