China market: China Mobile to start TD-LTE MVNO cooperation
China Mobile, currently the dominant TD-LTE mobile telecom carrier in the China market, will begin cooperation with TD-LTE mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), in a bid to quickly expand TD-LTE user base, according to industry sources.
China Mobile originally aimed at 50 million TD-LTE subscribers at the end of 2014, the sources said. China Mobile reached more than 40 million TD-LTE subscribers at the end of September and, based on continuous growth in user base, is expected to have more than 70 million subscribers at the end of 2014, the sources indicated.
In contrast, China Telecom and China Unicom have lagged behind in TD-LTE business development, the sources said. However, the two mobile telecom carriers focus on FDD-LTE instead of TD-LTE and have been actively deploying experimental FDD-LTE networks in major cities and are waiting for the government to release of FDD-LTE licenses, the sources indicated.
