Secretive augmented reality (AR) startup Magic Leap has received an investment from AT&T that will see it sell its wireless products exclusively through the telecoms giant in the US.
The AR company’s first product, the Magic Leap One, Creator Edition, was first unveiled at the backend of last year and is described as a ‘lightweight, wearable computer that will enrich real world experience with digital content’. It is scheduled to begin shipping to qualified designers and developers at some point this year but we still don’t know when a consumer version will be released.
“We’ve joined with AT&T because we believe in a combined vision of expanding high-speed networks, edge computing, and deep integration with creative content,” said Rony Abovitz, founder, president and CEO of Magic Leap. “Coupling the strength of the evolving AT&T network with Magic Leap’s spatial computing platform can transform computing experiences for people.”
The deal with AT&T will see consumer products eventually make their way to select AT&T stores in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, with more markets to come.
