Macon’s Museum of Arts and Sciences has a new resident.
Meet Tank, the African turtle.
DNR Ranger First Class David Fisher found the turtle on Sardis Church Road as he was patrolling the area on Sunday, according to Sharron Cornacchione with the Museum of Arts and Sciences. He spotted the turtle attempting to cross a busy intersection.
“He is amazing,” she said. “We’ve been toying with names for him, but we came up with the name Tank because he’s like a little tank when he goes around.”
Tank is a Sulcata Tortoise, which comes from the Sahara Desert in Africa.
Cornacchione says he is about 50 pounds, and he can get up to 200. The museum has not been able to determine an age, but 10 years old is their prediction.
It is also still a mystery whether or not Tank was someone’s pet and how long he has been on his own.
